Pole Dancing for Two

As someone who’s passionate about pole dancing, it’s only natural to wonder whether you can continue practicing while pregnant. The short answer is yes—pole dancing can generally be safe during a low risk pregnancy, but there are important considerations to keep in mind.

First, let’s start with some basic facts: staying active throughout pregnancy is widely encouraged. Health professionals—including doctors, midwives, and physiotherapists—often recommend maintaining an active lifestyle to support your overall health and well-being. Exercise during pregnancy helps improve circulation, reduces discomfort, and can even ease labour. However, the key here is moderation and listening to your body.

Pregnancy and Pole Fitness: What You Need to Know

If you’re already a pole dancer and find out you’re expecting, you’re probably wondering whether you can continue with your practice. In most cases, the answer is yes, but it depends on your unique situation. Here are some factors to consider:

Your current fitness level

If you were pole dancing regularly before pregnancy, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to continue—provided your pregnancy is low-risk and your healthcare team gives the green light. However, this isn’t the time to start pole for the first time or to return after a long break. Listen to your body, and take it easy as your body goes through many changes during this time.

Work with your healthcare provider

Always consult with your healthcare provider before continuing or adjusting your pole routine. Your doctor or midwife will offer personalised advice based on your health and the specifics of your pregnancy. It’s crucial that they monitor your progress and give you guidance on which movements are safe.

Make necessary modifications

If you’re cleared to keep dancing, be prepared to make some adjustments. The focus should be on maintaining strength and mobility, rather than pushing your limits or aiming for advanced tricks. Stretching for flexibility is not recommended during pregnancy because your ligaments and joints become more relaxed due to hormonal changes, which can increase your risk of injury.

What to Avoid While Pole Dancing During Pregnancy

Although pole dancing can be a great way to stay active, there are certain movements and actions you should avoid for safety:

Avoid advanced moves

It’s not the time to work on complicated or advanced tricks like flips, drops, or anything with a lot of dynamic motion. The risk of injury increases as your body undergoes changes during pregnancy.

No stretching to increase flexibility

Pregnancy hormones cause your ligaments to loosen, and excessive stretching may lead to joint instability or pain. Focus on gentle stretching to maintain range of motion, but don’t push beyond what feels comfortable.

Avoid overexertion

As your body adapts to pregnancy, your energy levels and stamina may fluctuate. Pay attention to how your body responds and take breaks when needed. Listen to any discomfort or fatigue, and remember that your body needs rest.

When Pole Dance Might not be Safe During Pregnancy

There are specific conditions in which pole dancing—along with most forms of exercise—should be avoided. If you experience any of the following, it’s important to stop pole dancing immediately and consult your healthcare provider:

  • You’ve never done pole dancing before, or have had a long break (over six months)
  • Incompetent cervix
  • Placenta previa
  • Pre-eclampsia or pregnancy-induced hypertension
  • Multiple gestation with risk factors for preterm labor
  • Severe anemia
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Amniotic fluid leakage

If any of these apply to you, your healthcare provider can recommend alternative exercises to help you stay active and healthy during your pregnancy.

Consulting a specialist

A crucial step in navigating pole fitness during pregnancy is seeking advice from a women’s health physiotherapist. They can help you adjust your routine, guide you on safe movements, and ensure your body is prepared for the changes ahead. Early consultation can offer peace of mind and keep you on track, allowing you to continue enjoying pole dancing in a safe, supportive way throughout your pregnancy.

Your pole journey during pregnancy

While pole dancing during pregnancy is generally safe for those with low-risk pregnancies, it’s always essential to prioritize your health and the health of your baby. Listening to your body, following your healthcare provider’s advice, and making appropriate adjustments to your routine are the best ways to ensure you can continue pole dancing safely. Remember, the goal is to keep moving, but also to keep it safe, supportive, and fun.
